The Evans Farm has been in our family for many years now. It was purchased as a homestead in the 1930's by Paul and Ceciel Evans, both Wallowa County natives. Ceciel was born near the small town of Paradise, Oregon which was approximately 30 miles north of the Wallowa Valley. She went went to school at the Troy school and after graduation continued to get her teaching degree at Monmouth College in LaGrande, Oregon. Ceciel returned to the valley and taught in one of the one-room school houses which were spread across the county. It was then she met Paul, notably "the most eligible bachelor in the County". Paul had graduated from the 8th grade and then taken on a man's responsibilities, running a band of sheep in the wilderness during the summer. He had a huge love for Wallowa County, a strong work ethic, and a way with horses. Growing up in the valley in the early 1900's, Ceciel and Paul grew up horseback which was the sole means of transportation. Paul farmed with teams and was proficient as starting the colts in harness and under saddle.
The farm is located on East Dorrance Lane, named for the Tom Dorrance, a well known horse trainer in his day.
Through the years, Ceciel and Paul lived on the farm and raised their three children. The farm was almost completely self sufficient with a huge garden, chickens, pigs, sheep, hay and grain, and a band of purebred Jersey milk cows.
The current home was built in 1994, replacing the old two story home.
Through the more recent years, the Evans Farm has been the home of the well known Mt Dragon Pony Acres. Producing quality Welsh ponies for over thirty years, ponies carrying the Evans prefix have been exported as far away as Australia, have formed the foundation for numerous breeding programs, produced ponies who have won on the highest levels of competition nationally and internationally. In 2015 many of the ponies were sold through a high end on-line auction. The small nucelus of Ponies which remain represent some of the best of this successful breeding program. Guests at the farm have the pleasure of watching mares, foals, and young stock graze in the pastures.
2016 marked the first season the home was available as a vacation rental. Our guests loved the privacy and beauty of the property, the welcoming ambience of the elegant farm house, and the easy accessibility of it's location. Reunions, birthday celebrations, retreats, and family events have been hosted here. It is a great pleasure to share this beautiful place with others.
In 2017 a Glamping tent ~ Glamp by the River ~ was added. The 12' x 17' Montana Canvas wall tent is near a small branch of the Wallowa River with an extravagant view of the bottom acres of the Farm and the Wallowa Mountains. The tent is on a blue pine platform with a 5' deck, has running water, electricity, a Queensized bed, and a wood stove among it's amenities. There is an outdoor shower near by with hot water.
2018 will see the addition of the Cottonwood tent which is also located near the Wallowa River branch in a grove of mature Cottonwoods. It has a 6' deck and the view looks directly toward the stunning Hurricane Creek canyon.
